Experimental studies of DTPs


Although it is well-known that drylands can cross tipping points, experimental manipulations to evaluate them are still rare. This work package will fill this research gap, and will complement the correlative approach of work package E2 with mechanistic information. To this end, we will establish the central research platform ‘TipEx’ that will experimentally push a Namibian savanna rangeland beyond a DTP by combining two triggers of catastrophic shifts – severe grazing and severe drought. We assume that a DTP will cascade through ecosystem compartments (from a fast response of plant populations to a slow response of soils and seed banks), and that this will have negative effects on bio­diversity and on the ecosystem service of forage supply.
